Hello, Could you please tell me in a formal letter how many spaces there are after a period?

Just the one.

This is a controvertial point as it happens, as many people believe it looks nearer to add an extra space. This such personal ammendment is perfectly acceptable, though techincally there should only be one space after a period.

The rule for punctuation is one following space. It is not necessary to put any more, and it takes up typing time.
