Hi

1. death penalty = capital punishment
A person sentenced to death is a person who was judged and got the capital punishment[the worst punishment of all] for his/her deeds : death by letal injection or gas chamber.
2. This Christmas falls on a Sunday. It means that ,this year, Christmas falls on a [day of] Sunday.

Regards
