Question prepositions
Hi,
I am thoroughly confused about the usage of these words. Do we say
I am going to Sam s party
or
I am going for Sam s party

Hello Sandy, welcome to UsingEnglish!

If you want to express "motion towards", you use "to":

1. I am going to Sam's party tonight.

If you want to express "purpose", you use "for":

2. "Why are you going to Manchester?" "I'm going for Sam's party."

However, the meaning in #2 is much less common than the meaning in #1.
