Default Use of 'made of' or 'made from' or 'made out of'

When to use and what is the difference in the usage of each of the following: 'made of' or 'made from' or 'made out of'

Well, cream is made from milk, but it is not made of milk, because it is no longer milk.

"Made of" or "made up of" refers to to what something comprises or consists of. It usually refers to individual parts that are still recognizable. It can also refer to the composition of something made from refined or man-made ingredients.

The USA is made up of 50 individual states.
A tossed sald is made of lettuce, tomatoes, and onion.
This desk is made of plastic.

"Made from" or "made out of" refers to the ingredients in something. These are usually raw materials or things that are no longer recognizable.

This cereal is made form oats.
This girder is made form iron ore.

Thank you very much RonBee and MikeNewYork for the responses. It was of great help. There was a discussion over the usage of the words mentioned in my query. I gave the same answers as you did in your responses, but there was a lot of disagreement among the teachers. I stumbled upon this site from yahoo search and posted. Wow I am glad that I am a member here.

Hello Red5

Yes thanks. I am honoured and hope to meet the expectations.

I have another query pertaing to the previous one. Is 'made out of' ever used at all, if 'yes' then in what contexts? Thanks in advance.

Is "made out of" ever used at all? It certainly is. The substance that a thing is built with is what it is made out of.
