Question Help with an uncommon expression

Bell Weather.........Has anyone ever heard this expression... i am typing a letter for my boss and he is using the expression as he compares something to another? Any comments?

I believe he means bellwether. It refers to a trendsetter or a leader.

A bell weather is something that signifies what is likely to happen in the future. In politics, Ohio is known as the bell weather state in presidential elections; meaning that however Ohio votes so will the majority of all US voters.

noun 1 the leading sheep of a flock, often with a bell on its neck. 2 a leader or indicator
