Default flee

Hi,
I am confused about the word, flee, in the following sentence, They fled Russian because of religious oppression.
Does it mean that they have been in another country. if it is true, can I say that they have fled from Russia because of religious oppression.
BTW, if they are different, could you tell the difference of 'flee' and flee from'?
Best regards!

'They fled Russia' means that they left Russia.

Either fled or fled from is possible. You see, the preposition from is housed within the verb's meaning:

flee, verb. (past tense fled)

1. to run away, as from danger or pursuers; take flight.
2. to move swiftly; fly; speed.
3. to run away from (a place, person, etc.).
