Unhappy Subject verb agreement

Making pies and cakes is/are difficult.

Cleaning living room and kitchen is/are my task.

which is the correct answer? please explain how it is correct?

Waht are the use of sequence consistent tense?

In both of your cases, the subject is the gerund i.e. Making and Cleaning

respectively; that's why the singular verb is is the correct choice.
