went mental
As soon as the doorbell rang, the pets went mental, just like they always do. George(a greyhound) was jumping around the hall like a puppy on a pogo stick, Kenneth(a scotie dog) was meeeeee-hooooow-ling for all he was worth.
Does went mental mean went crazy? Are there any subtle nuances?
I presume I sense a little bit of satire from the phrase in green because, for me, it implies Kenneth was good for nothing and even its howling sounded like a cat's, right?

Re: went mental
What you've said is exactly what I would say-went mental means the same thing as went crazy and I agree with the satire comment.
