What it mean?

It's incomplete, but if you ask for something earnestly, you ask in a very serious way and do your best to get the other person to give it to you.

'earnestly' is an adverb whereas 'earnest' is the adjective.
He asked for an earnest answer.

He asked earnestly/he earnestly asked...
