when whould earth be capitalised

You would capitalise the word Earth when it is being used as a proper noun describing the planet Earth.

You would also capitalise it at the beginning of sentences.

If you are just talking about earth (soil), it would not be capitalised.

When referring to the planet, it is not always necessary to capitalise; in expressions like 'nothing on earth' it isn't necessary. in fact, I would probably not capitalise much. I would if I used the definite article, or was writing a text with the names of other planets.
