Default hired / engaged a tutor

His parents engaged / hired a tutor.

Which verb in bold should be used? What is the difference between the two words, if any?

In England either would be used. Engaged is slightly more formal; hired implies a more temporary situation (ie, he has been hired for a specific period or to teach for a specific purpose.)
