Red face salvo

What does the metaphoric usage of "salvo" mean? Does it convey the meaning of "praise" or "attack" on someone? when one says "the first salvo was fired/shot by his wife", will it mean "his wife atacked him first or offended him first"? Which is correct, fired the salvo or shot the salvo?

Default Re: salvo

noun (pl. salvos or salvoes) 1 a simultaneous discharge of artillery or other guns in a battle. 2 a sudden vigorous series of aggressive statements or acts.

You "fire a salvo"; and yes, his wife fired off the first shot - was the first to gdt in with her attack.
