echoing, sounding low yet firm
He started running very fast this time. He was only ten leads away, when he fell for the third time. This time he only wished he had disappeared and all his hope had fled away. But he heard a echoing, sounding low yet firm. It said that eh hasn't lost at all and winning is nothing but rising each tile you fall. So this time he decided to run whether he would win or loss the game.
Could anyone explain the highlighted words?

(2) an echoing what? An echoing murmur/roar/whisper/shriek? Whatever noise it is, it is low and strong.
