Besides, someone told me that it's an allusion to something in the Bible.  |

And sometimes the bereaved woman would not want to be attractive anyway: there's a folk-song (English, but we are not alone in this respect) that says Quote:
I'll cut away my bonny hair
No other man shall think me fair
| [ bonny and fair both mean 'attractive' in this context].
