    Default rise or raise

    Is it possible to say
    They decided to rise prices?
    or only they decided to raise prices?

    Hi,

    IMO, it would only be the latter: they decided to raise prices.

    Prices rise, but people raise prices.
    Rise = intransitive (no object)
    Raise= transitive (takes an object)

    There are a couple of rare transitive uses of "rise".

    One is to "rise" a fish -- to cause it to come to the surface.
    The other is a nautical term, to "rise" a bit a land or other object above the horizon line by moving closer to it. :wink:
