what does the expressions "Life is like a box of chocolates" mean?

This quote is from the book (and movie) Forest Gump by Winston Groome. The main character compares life to a box of assorted chocolate candies. You never know what flavor candy you have until you eat it, and you never know what each day and each situation in life will give you until you live it.
