Hello there,
I signed online the other dayand my boyfriend's msn messenger signed in automatically. His cousin who lived in the states (she's half american) talked to me assuming I was him.
I explained to her that I was his girlfriend and that the messenger signed in automatically. We got talking for a while then she told me 'I'm sorry but your style in English language is exactly like him' I said 'Is it, ma be I learnt from him then' she said 'Learnt? , does that mean that you don't learn from him anymore'
I didn't find the conversation very comfortale. What does she mean by saying 'I'm sorry but your style in English language is exactly like him' ? That we use the same words or the same punctuation or dialect or what? or may be she assumed it was him petending to be me!
Sorry for the long question but she made me nervous!!!
Thaks a lot!
I'm assuming that your boyfriend is also not a native English speaker. His cousin may have noticed certain non-standard usages in your writing, things a native speaker would be unlikely to say, (like, "we got talking for a while") and also noticed similar usages in your boyfriend's English.
Don't worry, it sounds to me like she was just trying to be friendly.
