Put or keep

If you ask somebody to place a cup of tea on table, how do you say that?

1. Please, put it on the table.
or
2. please, keep it on the table.

I am not very clear when to use put and when to use keep.

In this example, you would say either "just put it on the table" or maybe "just set it on the table." "Keep" indicates a long term of possession. For example, "where do you keep your teabags?" "In the cupboard above the stove."
