Default outer space or just space

please help me understand this sentence ( and specially underlined part) meaning:
"Its arguments are spinning off rapidly into some metaphysical outer space where they become nothing but a muffled cry."
can we replace it with "space" only? any differences?

Default Re: outer space or just space

Not to me, because that could be a place. It means the silent, vacuum of outer space- it is, I think, referring to the film Alien which had the tagline 'In space no one can hear your scream', but in this context, it is much clearer to me with the word 'outer'.
