main current
main current -------- A river has a main current that takes most of the water down it, with subsidiary currents where the flow is interrupted.
Please explain the highlighted words.

Re: main current
current = the flow, movement of water, so the main current is the strongest flow of water, and the subsidiary currents are less powerful and can be blocked sometimes.

Thank you very much.

What does `that takes most of the water down it' means in this?
Could you explain it, please?

Re: main current
A river has water in it. The main current will be the movement of [most/the bulk] of the water.
If you have a river nearby, go and look at it and watch how the water moves.
