Default Writing level

Hello,
Today I happened to find the Flesch-Kincaid check on my computer.
I was shocked to find my writing to be as low as the 6th grade level. When writing a novel what level should one work toward?
Thank you,
nannyonthenet

I wouldn't worry too much about indices. They are based on poorly worked out methods. A novel written for 6th graders might be a best-seller.

The level doesn't indicate the quality of the writing.
