please help me understand this sentence:
For some people , history is an "anything goes".

Some people will regard any "fact" as true, whether the fact is proven or not.

It's a recognised phrase :

That nightclub is the sort of place where anything goes = You can do what you like in that nightclub

Are you allowed to wear shorts into the office? Yes - anything goes these days! = There are no rules about how we dress in the office.

I think Nimsooze was referring to 'anything goes' used as a noun, Anglika.

It isn't overly common, Nimsooze. That's likely why the writer of the sentence used quotations around it.
