eg:
Question:it has been posited that a high degree of curiosity proved lethal to a feline.
Answer: Curiosity killed the cat.

Question: the resultant experimental date indicate that there is no utility in belabouring a deceased equine.

Well, if the horse is dead, there's no sense in kicking it with your spurs or beating it with your wip to get it to go. In other words, beating/flogging a dead horse is a lost cause.
