Default I need help with a sentence.

I have to translate the following sentence into my mother-tongue, but I can't understand it. Paraphrase it so that I can understand it, please

Hardly surprisingly, America turned to its own domestic breed of emerging Abstract Expressionism.

I especially don't understand the red-colored part.

It was not surprising that American artists chose to develop an American style of Abstract Expressionist painting.
