Default How would I elicit the Function of Mixed Condtional Sentences?

I'm planning a lesson to ESL students (Elderly Russian) about the use of mixed conditionals sentences:
If + past , would + Have + Past Participle
If + Past Progressive , would + base from of Verb
How could I go about eliciting the function of the conditionals forms.. Futhermore what is the function of these forms?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

This is not a common form; it's often used with 'If I were you, I wouldn't have said that' to avoid the illogicality of 'If I had been you', with the implication that you could be me now or in the future.
