such time as he had free

I cannot figure out the meaning of the following phrase:

"He helped students with their homeworks in such time as he had free."

Does it mean he helped them all the time or that he did not have much time but he heleped nonetheless?

The latter - he doesn't have much free time but he helps when he has some.

I'm not familiar with that phrase either, but if I had to guess what it meant I'd say your second choice is my guess, too.
