is damage countable?

he must pay for the damage that's caused by his car
he must pay for the damages that are caused by his car

which one is correct

From the American Heritage Dictionary:

NOUN:
2. damages Law Money ordered to be paid as compensation for injury or loss.
.
Sample sentence (taken from the BNC):
"The damages are assessed by considering the harm done to the plaintiff's reputation associated with goodwill and the lost sales of the plaintiff's product as a result of the passing-off."

Hi,
So, the first one is correct and as Philly says, "damages" has a different meaning and is often used as a collocation "pay damages" in a legal sense.
