Meaning = finish a phone conversation.

So, I understood like this :

Dave finished a phone conversation guiltily when he saw his boss coming.


But still I can't understand.

Could you help please?

Dave should not have been using the telephone. His boss is coming. Dave puts the phone down because he feels guilty.
