ghetto
I have heard the word "ghetto" for a bunch of times, but I still don't quite get what it is. From the dictionary, it says that ghetto means"a very poor area of a city in which people of the same race or religion live, or a part of a society or group that is in some way set apart ." But yet, I think it has more meanings than that. Could anyone please give me some help?
Thanks!

ghetto first recorded in 1611, from Italian ghetto, meaning "part of a city to which Jews are restricted".
Various theories of its origin include:
1. Yiddish get "deed of separation;"
2. Special use of Venetian getto "foundry"
3. Egitto "Egypt," (presumably in memory of the exile);
4. Italian borghetto, "small section of a town" (borgo, borough).
Extended 1892 to crowded urban quarters of other minority groups.
Ghetto-blaster "large portable stereo" is from 1982.
