Thumbs up Correct analysis?

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to practice my understanding of grammar. I'm trying to be as detailed as possible in my explanations.

Is the following analysis right? Is there anything I should/could add to it?

Thanks.

The moment she entered1, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store2 with its bright lighting and neatly arranged shelves3.

Wink Re: Correct analysis?

For the record, I wasn't right.

As it turns out, I did make a mistake (and so did you )

Look here:

"[...] to our shiny store."

I said that "our" was a possessive pronoun, but it's not!

"ours" is a possessive pronoun, not "our".

In this phrase, "our" is a determiner. It determines store.

Could you confirm that I'm right about this?

There are four types of pronouns: subject, object, possessive, and demonstrative. Our and ours both answer the question Whose? which, by definition, makes them possessive pronouns in form. As for their function, our has an adjectival function (also referred to as determiner function in the literature) because it modifies nouns, whereas ours, a pronoun that sits in a subject or object position, has a nominal function.

In short, our is possessive pronoun in form and an adjective or determiner, depending on the terminology you subscribe to, in function. The terminology here can indeed be confusing, if you're talking about form alone:

our form: possessive pronoun
ours form: possessive pronoun

The terminology is not confusing, however, if you're talking about function:

our function: possessive adjective
ours function: possessive pronoun

Hope that helps.

All the best.
