sentence problem

Hundreds of books , newspapers and magazine articles , talk shows , and web sites have been buzzing with a new version of a very old question : what do women want ?updated, the question is what do mothers want ?

does it look like a valid sentence ? i found it in a parajumble excercise answer. if its valid , what does they "updated" doing here ? has it been properly used here ?

whats the meaning of this sentence ....it looks pretty odd.

It's a mess IMO. The idea is that the old question was about what woman want but nowadays the question has been update to ask what mothers want.
