what's the meaning of well-dated in the following contexts? (old, archaic or age of smth is known for sure?)
"For this time period, which is critical for understanding the spread of modern humans around the world, we have two well-dated human fossils from eastern Asia,"
To evaluate morbidity, particularly respiratory, in well-dated, near-term twins delivered electively and to compare them to those delivered either spontaneously or for obstetric indications.
Shell beads from Blombos Cave in South Africa may be the oldest, well-dated examples of jewelry, according to a new study that supports an early emergence of modern humanity in the 16 April 2004 issue of the journal Science.
"These are the oldest well-dated fossils of modern humans (Homo sapiens) currently known anywhere in the world,"
The archaeologists can date the remains with a fairly high degree of accuracy.
Not so sure about the obstetric use, but probably means that the mother and the doctors have a good idea of the exact age of the foetuses (ie at what date they were conceived).
thanks a lot for your quick response. :-)
just wondered, can well-dated mean (in another context) old, archaic?
Not that I can think of. Never met it in this way in my reading of archaeological texts.

When they said that, I was well pleased.
The final /l/ is often labialized, sounding a bit like a "w".
But the sort of context where you might expect that sort of 'well' (very informal) isn't the sort of context that would be likely to admit the term 'dated'. So I agree with Anglika.
thank you both for your explanations. it's really clear for me now.
by the way, Bob please have mercy on us foreigners:
"But the sort of context where you might expect that sort of 'well' (very informal) isn't the sort of context that would be likely to admit the term 'dated'.." :-? I finally uderstood what you meant after vaporising some of my brain.. ;-) (just joking , thanks again)
