Default attitude etc.

Dear teachers,

I have five questions to ask:

No.1

Newspapers vary greatly in their _______ to the government.
a. bias b. attitude
The key is 'a'. Could you please explain if I can choose 'b'?

No.2
I don't understand the meaning of the sentence. Could you please kindly explain them to me?

Fibers of hair and wool are not continuous and must normally be spun into thread if they are to be woven into textile fabrics.

No.3
There was an accident on this street this morning and ____ there had been a severe congestion of traffic.
a. since then b. after that
'a' is correct. No problem. Could you please explain if 'b' is correct, too?

No.4
She is always fashionably dressed and looks_________ among the girls in plain clothes.
a. outstanding b. conspicuous c. distinguishing
'b' is correct. No problem.
Could you please explain if 'b' and 'c' are correct or not?

No.5
The king's daughter threatened to drink the __ chemical if he refused her request.
a. deadly b. fatal c. mortal
'a' is correct. No problem. Could you please explain why 'b' and 'c' aren't correct?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.

Jiang

1 I would say that b) is the better choice.
2 The fibres are short and need to be woven together- wool is not very long on the sheep and needs to be turned into a continuous thread, as in a ball of wool.
3 With 'after that' the natural tense for me would be the simple past, implying that the traffic is moving again.
4 Not to me.
5 Fatal- has caused or will cause death- a fatal accident, a fatal illness
Deadly- capable of causing death
Mortal- what causes or caused death- a mortal wound

Dear Tdol,
Thank you very much for your explanation. Now I understand No.1-3 and No.5. If you have time please explain No.4. If you are busy then just forget it. I'll try to find out the answer.

Conspicuous means she is

1. easily seen or noticed; readily visible or observable

2.attracting special attention, as by outstanding qualities or eccentricities

If c. distinguishing were the answer it would have to be a past participle, distinguished.

Does that help?

All the best.
