Please Look At - Part two Here's the second part of my essay on a contemporary hero for instructions please refer to part one of please look at :) Making the battle against the HIV/AIDS virus your personal mission and priority is quite the ambition. Only Mr. Kofi Annan would be able to attempt to go up against the pandemic that currently has 38.6 million people living with it worldwide. “In 25 years, AIDS has changed the world. It has killed 25 million people. It has become the leading cause of death among both men and women aged between 15 and 59. It has inflicted the single greatest reversal in the history of human development. In other words, it has become the greatest challenge of our generation” (Annan). During his tenure, Mr. Annan established the Global AIDS and Health Fund to attempt to stimulate the increased spending needed to help developing countries confront the HIV/AIDS crisis. The eradication of this particular disease as well as others was established as one of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals in 2000. Mr. Annan has tried to continually reiterate how crucial funding for aid for the eradication of the virus is. He also has said that the United Nations goal of halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS virus by 2015 needs more resources from traditional donors, the private sector and the most affected countries themselves. More effective planning and better and more vocal leadership also are needed at every level. In addition, a real investment in the empowerment of women and girls is required to confront the crisis. Mr. Annan believes it requires everyone to fight against AIDS until the epidemic is reversed. Everyone should be as committed as the heroic Kofi Annan is to the cause, it should be society’s personal priority. Although, his tenure was not perfect and quite controversial due to major scandals even involving his own son, Kofi Anna truly touched the lives of many and only ever had innocent intentions at heart. Many have tried to tarnish his legacy by finding faults in the United Nations, but why should one man take the blame for an organization that represents the entire international community. It isn’t even fair to only blame the Untied States administration, the UN is the amalgamation of almost of every country in the world under one constitution how is it far to blame one country let alone one man. Kofi Annan is and should continue to be one of the most respected international figures, he was the most popular and successful Secretary General to ever serve, most believe. His international accomplishments alone make him a contemporary hero, however, the respect and admiration that he receives from almost all of global society truly proves Kofi Annan was not only a leader but a hero of modern day society. Thus, although Kofi Annan disappointed a number of people and some of his programs failed, Kofi Annan to most was still a commendable human being. Mr. Annan devoted his life to the United Nations thus, he wanted to enhance society with peace, the eradication of HIV/AIDS as well as the many other world issues the UN strives to improve or eliminate. Mr. Annan’s management techniques and ethical standards were always admired, as Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan earned countless accomplishments including the Nobel Peace Prize. Kofi Annan truly played a significant part in the contributing to his area of specialization thus in the area of international development. Kofi Annan is in many of society’s eyes their contemporary hero, even to this day he continues to receive awards for his achievement in leadership and is continually being offered international development positions. Kofi Annan may have led a controversial career nonetheless he is a contemporary hero always striving for an improved society. |
