Default archaic lang

is it grammatically wrong to use a conjunction like 'but' or 'and' at the beginning of a sentence?

No, but many prescriptivists over the years have said it is. Have a search in other threads that discuss this topic and you'll find some useful links. Sorry - I haven't the time to do the searching for you.

PS - with a screen name like that, I suspect you may be a teacher - in which case a cabal of prescriptivist teachers may be indoctrinating your pupils even as we speak!
