Default set the rhythm, trademarks shots past point

Jayasuriya, meanwhile set the rhythm by hitting one of his trademark shots past point and hence, set the things rolling and accelerated the run chase.

However, Upul Tharanga failed to pick up the rhythm, even after getting lucky once to have survived a drop catch by Stephen Fleming at a personal score of 8.

Please explain the highlighted group of words.
