Default groomed someone for three years

Why did they agree to appoint him (Younis Khan as vice-captain) then? You've groomed someone for three years to be captain. When I was captain there were calls to make Younis the captain. Now I've resigned and they're debating who should be captain!

I think, `groomed' means `prepared in the above paragraph.

Am I right?
If wrong, please tell the correct one.
