Using "make research" simply does not sound natural to me at all. Perhaps it is used in some variety of English other than British or American English. I simply have never heard it.

I've now done some searches of the BNC (British National Corpus). This is a good tool for checking usage.

Here is a BNC search for "make research into":

There are no results at all.

Doing a BNC search for "made research into" gets one single result. However, the word 'make' is not used to mean 'conduct'. Instead it means 'change (into)'.

Dear Philly,
Thank you very much for your help. I did find most of the examples are 'do research'. I think our problem is if there is examples like 'make research' in a dictionary which is the major means to learn English we would think it is correct. I should say according to your search result 'do research' is abosolutely correct. The exercises we are doing are possibly a passage taken from somewhere and the textbook compilers revised it as a cloze. So everything must be from the original passage.

Jiang specifically mentioned that "make research into" was mentioned in a dictionary, and in your subsequent post you seemed to be accepting that as the preferred collocation. And that is what puzzled me.

It can. I wasn't paying close enough attention at the time. Sorry.

I've done a bit of research myself, looking into the distribution and function of made into and done into. Two things are noteworthy:

i. Both of these are common

• Research has been done [pause] into <about 33,000 hits>
• Research has been made [pause] into <about 84,000 hits>

This one has the most,

• Research has been done [pause] on <463,000 hits>

This one has the least,

• Research has been made [pause] on <663 hits>

I agree with you Jiang. Made into seems to be a more plausible answer than does done into. As I see it, we've two options:

i. There's a typo in the text question: into should be on.
ii. The answer key is wrong. a), not b), is the key.

I missed it, sorry. I was dealing with research has been made into, not the opposite word order make research into. It's not a collocation - an inference on your part, maybe?
