Default canopy

Savannas are characterised by the trees being sufficiently small or widely spaced so that the canopy does not close.

what does canopy mean in this sentence?
can canopy mean the sky as well
like
the canopy is blue

since we are talking about sky. heavens means the same as sky?
the heavens are raining today.
should the verb be pplural agreement

The canopy is blue Poetically, it's used like this.

Since we are talking about sky, "heavens" means the same as sky? Yes
The heavens are raining today.
Should the verb be plural agreement Yes
..
