Can't 1 mean:
a-The first time I ever saw him was in 1992 and at that time he was depressed.
b-In 1992 I saw him on a few occasions (maybe I had seen him before 1992) and on the second occasion, he was depressed.
1. You saw him twice in 1992. He was depressed at the time of the second encounter.
