Default participles

hi to all,
how can we explain the use of participles as adjectives?when do we use the present or the past participle?
the lesson is interesting.active?
the pupils are interested .passive?
it has interested them.perfect?

the lesson is interesting.active? Yes; it's an adjective here

the pupils are interested .passive? There's a grey area where it can be unclear whether a past participle is an adjective or not, but here, without more context, I would say it was an adjective. If you had 'were interested by what I had to say', then it would be a passive.

it has interested them.perfect? It is active and present perfect
