Question The teachers here

Hi,
First, I’d just like to say how great it is to have a place like this on the net!
I am curious though; Is this site part of a university? Or better yet, do the teachers here work at different universities?

I’ll say one thing, there are times when I don’t want to bother my English teacher with emails, it’s such a relief being able to have another source of knowledge to turn to!

Thanks

The site is not part of a university and the teachers come from many different countries.

Could I ask you a question? Why did you start by writing "first" instead of "firstly"?

That’s a good question Riyadh, I don’t know but I like your way better. By the way, I appreciate the criticism; I wish my teacher would do that.
Thumbs up to you also dihen!

If I my ask both you guys; Riyahd and dihen two questions:
First: what will make me speak more properly? Do I need to read more? Why did I use first instead of firstly? Could that be a sign that I need to read more?

Second: I’ve been doing a lot of reading on grammar lately but there are so many rules. And although I do understand how to use commas and semi colons for some things, there are other times I don’t know if I’m using them correct. How do I get a handle on this?

For example: see above in the first sentence of the second paragraph. I said “If I my ask both of you guys; Riyahd and dihen two questions:

I sense there is something wrong with this sentence in blue, but I don’t know what?
-Did I use the colon correct at the end of the sentence?
-Did I use the semi colon correctly to pause?
-And where I said “If I my ask you” I don’t think the sentence is a wordy but something seems fishy about it, I just feel it.

I'd use a comma not a semi-colon as it's apposition. The colon is OK.

Thanx a lot, Starstreams.

I'm not a native speaker, and I've studied English for a couple of years only. I think that one has to practise, practise and practise in order to improve their English.
