Default Leave someone by?

Hi!
I have a question about a song text:
"Cos I left you by"
The expression should therefor be "leave someone by" but I don't know is that exists. It's a swedish songwriter and I understand what it means, but don't know if it is because I know swedish. It would then mean: "to leave someone and let that person just be in your past, to leaves someone and carry on with one's life without thinking of the person one has left"

Is this a possible expression in english?

all the best!
