Default use of "the"

Which one of the following sentences is correct?

Mr. Smith has accepted to be chief guest.

OR

Mr. Smith has accepted to be the chief guest.

Use 'the' as there's only one.

I wonder whether the def article could be used if chief guest is written as Chief Guest.

By the way, why dont we say " He has been elected the prime minister", but say "He has been elected prime minister"? Won't this rule apply to my earlier question?

Hope I get a reply to this as well
