Default as vs. like

What would be the correct word to use in the following sentence?
Solar energy does not pollute the enviornment (as,like) the burning of coal does.

I would say "like"

Solar energy does not pollute the environment like the burning of coal does.

I think that if you are to use "as" to compare things you have to use it twice.

"You use the structure as...as when you are comparing things."

Solar energy does not pollute as much as burning coal does.
