    Default diary

The dream of this day had begun to take shape when I was twelve, growing up in California. I had auditioned for the starring role in the 1959 movie The Diary of Anne Frank. I didn't get the part, but I found a whole new world in Anne Frank's diary.

I know the meaning of audition and also the meaning of `starring role - important role' but I can't understand `I had auditioned for the starring role'.

And also please explain (I didn't get the part) and what `diary' here refer to?

    Please help me.

    From Dictionary.com

audition, a trial performance, as by an actor, dancer, or musician, to demonstrate suitability or skill.

starring, the lead; the prominent part

role, a part or character played by an actor or actress.

diary, a daily record, usually private, esp. of the writer's own experiences, observations, feelings, attitudes, etc.
See Anne Frank: Definition and Much More from Answers.com

I didn't get the part means the actor didn't get the acting job.

    All the best.

    Thank you -- Casiopea

    I guess,
(The Diary of Anne Frank) is a movie name which was released in 1959 in my context.

Could you explain this --- But I found a whole world in Anne Frank's diary.

Also tell me, here (Anne Frank's diary) is a movie name or a real diary?

    Both.

    From Wikipedia:

"Her diary was published in 1947 in the Netherlands under the title Het Achterhuis (in English The Annex). The diary was translated into more than 50 languages and sold millions of copies. Now more commonly known as The Diary of Anne Frank, it has remained in print into the 21st century."

It was also a movie, "The diary of Anne Frank": Click here!

    You're most welcome.

    A good question.

" I didn't get the part, but I found a whole new world in Anne Frank's diary."

    Here's what I think.

Whoever wrote this tried to be in the movie: "The Diary of Anne Frank."

The thing is, the movie is based on an actual diary that was published. I'm assuming whoever tried to be in the movie read the diary beforehand.

    Is this clear?

    You're right, I did.

I think the writer here means that she learned a lot from reading Anne Frank diary. That is changed her perspective about many things.

    That's my interpretation of it.

The Diary of Anne Frank is one of those books that people read and then realize that their problems probably aren't so bad, compared to Anne and her family having to leave everything behind and live in a secret hiding place for two years. Others are moved by Anne's optimism (via her diary entries) and faith in humanity, despite her desperate circumstances.

As an aside, there's a joke in the theater world regarding this play....if someone is describing a very bad actress, they might say "She was so bad that when she starred in The Diary of Anne Frank and the Nazis came looking for her in that one scene, everyone in the audience yelled 'She's in the attic!'"
