I found, from the dictionary, attic = the space or room at the top of a building, under the roof, often used for storing things:

But, I think, this meaning is not appropriate in my sentence.

As for the attic, he probably wanted to explain that he had found it there, i.e. in the space or room at the top of a building, under the roof, often used for storing things.

It seems to me perfectly appropriate. Whatever he was reading (a book?) had been stored in the attic. He was so interested that he didn't turn away to answer. He just pointed upwards [made an indicating gesture with his hand, extending the index finger {the one next to his thumb} to the storage area at the top of the house].
