Default meaning

Ellen: Still living in Dallas, aren't you?
Alice: That's right. The kids like it here.
Would you please explain the meaning of the last sentence. Why do we use "it" ? Doesn't "here"s uffice? My problem is why do we use "it" and "here"?
Thanks
