with or without "the"

I'd like to ask about the preposition used with "stage."

Would you look at the following sentences?
1) This is the same guitar that Paul used on stage.
2) This is the same guitar that Paul used on the stage.

Should I put "the" before "stage" or not?

The article "the" is not necessary in that sentence. It can be used if the sentence is about a particular performance, and, therefore, a particular stage. Nevertheless, even in those circumstances, the article could be omitted. "On stage" without the article simply refers to the general circumstances of performing. :wink:
