What is the difference between smile to and smile at?

Hi kohyoongliat

When you smile at someone, you look at them and smile.
When you smile at a thought, that means that the thought brings a smile to your face (or causes you to smile).

I would expect 'smile to' to be used quite differently.
Have a look at some examples here.
